In the Middle Ages, the most important activity was the manufacture of olive oil. In 1036, the territory of Vallauris is assigned to the monastic brotherhood of Lerins islands by the Bishop of Antibes, in the great displeasure of its inhabitants. The municipality is free of this vassalage in 1787, just before the Revolution, by a decision of Louis XVI. After many wars, invasions, natural disasters such as the Great Plague of 1583, settlers from Genoa come to settle in Vallauris, then devastated and depopulated. All these settlers are potters, they bring with them their know-how. However, the basement of Vallauris clay contains a high quality, easy to work with, resistant, easy to cook. The vocation of the city potter was born. After varying fortunes, the ups and downs, a booming manufacturing in the eighteenth century, declining in the nineteenth under the effect of competition from products manufactured ordinary dishes in large batches, Vallauris leaves the market subject to use current and converts in the art object, aesthetic or decorative, for decoration or design. Vallauris owes much of its notoriety to two artists who have attached their name to this town for ever. Pablo Picasso settled there in 1950, attracting other artists and visitors, organizing and sponsoring exhibitions, signing many pottery works. Jean Marais are retired in 1978, after a first stage and film career out, to get to the pottery until her death in 1998. He is also buried in the small cemetery of the village.
